January, 2008 meeting minutes

The Sherlock Holmes Society of Austin met on Monday, January 14, 2008, at 6:30 p.m., at the La Madeleine Restaurant located at 9828 Great Hills Trail, Suite 650, in Austin.

We had a wonderfully large turnout to celebrate the Master's Birthday. Attendees were: Augustin,, Dave, Russ, Carolyn, Pauline, Mark, Matt, Trish, Ron, Earl, and Sarah Ann.

We welcomed newcomer Mark to our meeting with an around-the-table introduction. Each of us briefly (or not) told how long we had been in the Society and what led us to our interest in Sherlock Holmes. Even after obtaining such insight into the members of the Society, Mark refused to be scared off. Clearly, he is a man of the same steady mettle as our beloved Dr. Watson. Welcome to our society, Mark!

In addition, we were so very pleased to welcome back Pauline and Augustin, who joined our Society last month. They make a long trip from San Antonio to attend our meetings, but we are thrilled to have them with us.

We began our celebration of the Master's Birthday with a most entertaining "show and tell" of the Sherlockian items that the Society members brought to the meeting. These were either Christmas gifts received last month, or items that we had never shown the Society before but thought might be of special interest. Items passed around the table included biographies of Arthur Conan Doyle, lecture DVD's on the history of the English language, original editions of The Strand with "Silver Blaze" and other Doyle works, "case folders" of three of Holmes's most exciting cases assembled by (the wonderfully named) Simon Goodenough, a really cool Sherlock Holmes action figure doll (with detachable pipe and magnifying glass!), and (in my opinion, saving the best for last) an absolutely gorgeous Sherlockian-themed chess set from the prestigious Studio Anne Carlton collection.

A tip of the hat goes to Sarah Ann for the next item on the agenda: party poppers with party hat, secret prize, and trivia quiz inside. Really cool!

We closed the celebration with the traditional toasts to those who enrich our reading hours: to Sherlock Holmes, the Master; to "the woman"; to Watson; and of course, to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Literary Agent.

We ended the meeting with just a couple items of business:

* Because La Madeleine overbooked the room we normally use, we will consider our future meeting locations as a little more TBD (to be determined) than usual. More details will follow.
* We will move the Jerry Hurst presentation to June.
